The wind is howling outside. It is furiously rattling the windows of the castle. The storm growls where it is crouching on the cliff. The floorboards moan like an old woman underfoot. Lightning tears the sky, and grey sheets of rain batter the stone walls mercilessly. Inside the castle, servants huddle in quiet conversation. They are gossiping about the sounds coming from the chamber upstairs. The cook sternly admonishes them to get back to their duties. Yet the sounds continue unabated. On the walls of the chamber, stern images of predecessors glare down through the cobwebs. The wine-red carpet is threadbare in places. A single dusty chandelier valiantly attempts to dispel the dark shadows in the corners. A young unwed mother gives birth to a child that is not of this world, in a castle that is haunted by evil beings. Her lover comes looking for her, and finds more than he has bargained for
