If you want to write, you must learn to become a watcher. Watch what happens around you. Watch the way that people behave. Often something you see will spark the idea for an entirely new novel.
Even the news could inspire an idea for a new story. You will be amazed at the things that can inspire you. Research, a lot. Look up places on the internet. Horror writers, abandoned places can really trigger some interesting stories.
Live in the moment. If there is a thunderstorm, watch it, smell it, experience it. That is the only way you will learn to describe what it is like. Imagine describing it to a blind person so that he can experience it for himself.
Listen to the sounds around you, and find a way to describe them so others can hear them too. Wherever you go, carry a pen and notepad with you. Ideas have a way of jumping out at you with no regard to how convenient it is.
Write down that idea, even if it comes to you in the middle of the night. By morning, you would might have lost it. Spend time daily to write, it is the only way that you will ever finish that novel.
Have a new idea, but you are busy with another novel? Start on it right away, it breaks the monotony of working on one thing all the time. I always have more than one project going. Sometimes, if you move away from one novel to another, then go back, you are inspired to write better.
Writing is not easy. If it was, everyone would be doing it. Thing is, you have a desire to write, to tell your story like nobody else can. Do not give up. Do not get disheartened. Do not measure your worth to that of another writer. We are all different. We all have different stories to tell. Tell your story as only you can.
What does winter feel like? Summer? Autumn? Spring? What do smells remind you of? Make it a practise to experience everything fully, and then go sit down and write your heart out.
